Visit of the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention

The United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention of the United Nations Human Rights Council conducted a country mission to Malaysia from 7 to 18 June 2010, following an invitation from the Government. The delegation was headed by Mr. El Hadji Malick Sow, as the Working Group Chair-Rapporteur, and  Mr. Roberto Garretớn and by two members of the Working Group’s Secretariat from the United Nations Office at Geneva.

The Working Group met with high level authorities from the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches of Government to study the institutional and legal framework regarding deprivation of liberty in the country.  Meetings were also held with representatives of the Bar Council, civil society organizations, and representatives of United nations agencies and international organizations.

The Working Group visited various places of detention, including prisons, immigration holding facilities, police stations, psychiatric hospitals, and a drug rehabilitation center.

A final report on the visit will be presented to the Human Rights Council in March 2011.
