On its 65th Anniversary, UN resolves to do more for Peace, Development, Human Rights and Climate Change
Kuala Lumpur, 25 October 2010 – The United Nations emphasized its continuing commitment to do more for peace, development human rights and climate change during the celebration of its 65th Anniversary in Kuala Lumpur today, officiated by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Senator Mr. A. Kohilan Pillay.
More than 300 guests from the diplomatic missions, government agencies, academic institutions, civil society and the media joined the United Nations in reaffirming a societal commitment to justice, peace and development.
In his Welcoming Remarks, Mr. Kamal Malhotra, UN Resident Coordinator said, “Today, the United Nations is much more than a peacekeeper and a forum for conflict resolution. We know that 65 years on, the world has changed dramatically. We can see more clearly now than ever before, that in this complex and interdependent world, the threats of climate change, the spread of disease and deadly weapons and the scourge of terrorism, among the other threats and challenges facing our global community, transcend national borders and spare no one."
In a video message from him played in conjunction with the anniversary, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon spoke of the role of the United Nations in advancing the international development agenda. “UN day is a day on which we resolve to do more. More to protect those caught up in armed conflict, to fight climate change and avert nuclear catastrophe; more to expand opportunities for women and girls, and to combat injustice and impunity; more to meet the Millennium Development Goals.”
To acknowledge the work of Malaysians in furthering the cause of peace, human rights and development, the United Nations in Malaysia reinstated the UN Person / Organisation of the Year Award in 2010.
The UN also gave recognition to two Malaysian broadcasters for being winners of UNICEF’s top East Asia Pacific awards - International Children’s Day of Broadcasting (ICDB) Award. Representatives from the two media organisations will receive their awards in New York on 2 November 2010. As regional winners, they stand a chance of winning the Global ICDB Award 2010 which will be announced in New York at the same event.
The UN Day celebrations also featured performances from the SMK Seafield Choir and the Sunway University College Resident Ensemble.
